Claws click on pavement- you see movement out of the corner of your eye. What could be lurking there in the uncertain darkness? Mythology is the explanation of what lies beyond our range of experience. Myths are used to tell the stories of creation, explain how the world works, recount the lives of heroes, and foretell the end of the world. Mythology is the collective dream of society, a society in which I feel I am a both a participant and an outsider. I often I find myself in a fantastic and bizarre world because of my interpretation of this dream, our mythology. I am compelled to create creatures of clay as a part of my own mythology, created in my own mind removed from society. They are formed with coils and slabs to make hollow forms to a less imposing stature then I am used to seeing them in the dreamscapes. By researching Celtic, Norse, and Greek myths I have found a new understanding of where my own ideas come from. Discovering the myths of ancient times has allowed me to view my work in a cosmological continuum. Most of my inspiration comes from new mythology spawned from contemporary cinema and novels. As a child I created imaginary friends and had vivid dreams in which I played the hero and I had lots of time to read and imagine. Growing up this led me to art as a way to express my inner imaginings. I see the creatures I build as a way of sharing my imagination with the world and a way to find balance in my daily life. My work is a personification of the deepest reaches of my mind and I hope that others enjoy my work.
