Many months ago, I saw a Dana Howl video about a game called Snak28. Small warbands of candy themed warriors fight each other while evading and possibly defeating a wild snack monster. The warriors can consume the fallen to gain their powers. Super awesome game with a fantastic theme. At the end of the video, they talked about how there was a contest to make a snack monster and I was intrigued and decided I would at least make some warriors to test out the game and make a monster too. Cut to earlier the month it was due I convinced myself the challenge was to make two armies and the monster. A rational person would have checked the rules again or even referenced the video, but no, I just got building.
For the armies I took some plastic knights I picked up in a bucket at thrift store and sized them up with some fondant molds I bought a few years back with cute animal faces. I beheaded the knights and used the molds to make what would be comically oversized Sculpey masks for the knights, attaching more mid torso than on top. I used superglue with my basing mixture, covered some big gaps with Miliput, and had the idea to slather on some of my texture paints as well. The paint was the color of buttercream frosting, building onto the narrative that these knights were lost in the wastes for a long stretch of time and had to reassemble themselves with frosting to continue fighting.
They got attached to bases, base coated in black matte paint, dry brushed hastily, and wash was used on the knightly bits. I made the two factions easily recognizable as green and purple, so they would stand out from each other on the battlefield.
The beast. I knew I wanted to make one of my eye creatures differently and ended up with the idea of spoiled sentient food using a cupcake foil liner as a shell or house and ran with it. I used aluminum foil to form the body and lock in the armature wire in positions I liked. They still moved a bit so I added on the base layer of Sculpey and tossed it in the oven. I added more clay along the legs, thickening the connection points and covering all the wire. At this point I added an eye and textured the entire form. Satisfied I tossed him back in the oven. Once cool I did the standard prime coat, drybrush, wash, and painted the eye with several coats of paint. After everything was dry I went and put the cupcake liner on them and realized it looked off. I took this chance to go back to the video and realized that he needed to be based on a 60mm base, or 2.4 inches… his legs are around 6 inches around his central form, and upside down in the liner he lacks the same creep factor.
If you want to play Snak28 the rules are in Itch.io. The game is amazing and I want more people playing!
I was able to meet Fiver in person and give them a knight from each of my factions and learn more about the game in person.
